WILLEMSTAD – More than half of households in Curaçao say they do not earn enough income to pay their debts and interest, according to the first results of the Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) 2025 Social Survey.
The preliminary findings, released by the CBS, provide an initial snapshot of living conditions on the island and highlight ongoing financial challenges for many residents.
According to the survey, 53 percent of households reported that their income is insufficient to cover debt repayments and interest obligations. In addition, nearly 37 percent said they do not have enough money to afford healthy food.
The survey also examined media and technology use. More than 83 percent of households reported having internet access at home, underscoring the widespread availability of digital connectivity across the island.
WhatsApp remains by far the most widely used social media platform in Curaçao. According to the survey, 90 percent of social media users use WhatsApp, followed by Facebook and YouTube.
On the issue of public safety, the findings show that more than two-thirds of respondents feel safe or very safe walking alone in their own neighborhood during the evening.
The CBS emphasized that these are preliminary results from the 2025 Social Survey and are intended to provide an up-to-date overview of the state of Curaçao's society. More detailed reports covering the individual topics examined in the survey will be published in the coming months.
