WILLEMSTAD – Most households in Curaçao did not experience crime during the past year, while a majority of residents say they feel safe walking alone in their neighborhoods at night, according to the CBS Social Survey 2025.
The report found that 92.4% of households reported no experience with the crimes included in the survey during the previous 12 months. Only 7.6% indicated they had been victims of at least one type of crime.
Among reported crimes, burglary was the most common, affecting 3.1% of households. Theft from vehicles and theft of personal belongings each affected 1.7% of respondents.
Other offenses—including robbery, assault, threats, vehicle theft, corruption and hit-and-run incidents—were each reported by less than one percent of households.
According to the CBS, property crimes remain significantly more common than violent offenses.
The survey also measured residents' perception of safety.
More than half of respondents (53.1%) said they feel very safe walking alone in their neighborhood during the evening, while another 14.4% said they feel somewhat safe.
Only 6.6% reported feeling somewhat or very unsafe. However, a notable 25.8% said they never walk alone at night in their neighborhood.
The report also examined bullying.
A total of 97.1% of respondents said they had not experienced bullying during the previous year. Among those who had, verbal bullying was by far the most common form at 2.2%, while cyberbullying and physical bullying each accounted for just 0.3%.
The CBS cautioned that crime victimization surveys may be affected by underreporting because of the sensitive nature of the questions.
