WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao's historic participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup should become more than just a sporting achievement. According to the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS), the island must capitalize on its unprecedented international exposure to strengthen its tourism industry for years to come.
In its June 2026 Economic Bulletin, the Central Bank recommends using the global attention generated by the World Cup to reinforce Curaçao's destination branding and attract new visitors long after the tournament ends.
The CBCS believes the island should convert the increased international visibility into sustained tourism demand through targeted marketing campaigns and strategic promotion in overseas markets. The Bank also recommends diversifying tourism source markets instead of relying heavily on traditional visitors from North America and Europe.
Beyond attracting more tourists, the report encourages Curaçao to focus on higher-value tourism by promoting products and services that generate greater economic benefits while maintaining the quality of the visitor experience.
Tourism remains the primary driver of Curaçao's economic growth. The Central Bank notes that both stay-over arrivals and cruise tourism have recovered strongly in recent years, contributing significantly to economic expansion across the island.
The recommendations come as Curaçao enjoys unprecedented international attention through its first-ever FIFA World Cup appearance, giving the island an opportunity to introduce itself to millions of viewers around the world.
According to the CBCS, transforming that exposure into long-term visitor growth will require coordinated marketing efforts and policies that ensure tourism expansion remains sustainable while protecting the island's carrying capacity and natural resources.
