Local, Economy, | By Correspondent August 7, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – The Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS) is expanding efforts to better protect consumers while improving access to financial services throughout the monetary union.

One of the major milestones highlighted in the 2025 Annual Report is the implementation of Curaçao's Deposit Guarantee Scheme, which became operational on July 1, 2025. Preparations are also underway to introduce the same protection in Sint Maarten.

The bank also launched an Annual Percentage Rate (APR) calculator to help consumers better understand the real cost of loans and strengthened supervision of lenders to ensure compliance with consumer protection rules. The complaints process is being digitized to improve oversight and identify recurring problems in the financial sector.

Financial education remains another major priority. During 2025, the CBCS organized programs for students, employees and the wider public covering budgeting, borrowing, saving and long-term financial planning. The bank also increased public awareness efforts surrounding the Caribbean guilder and continues developing interactive online economic dashboards.

The report states that these initiatives are intended to strengthen financial inclusion and improve financial literacy across both Curaçao and Sint Maarten.
