CASHA criticizes resort-driven tourism model, calls for stronger local impact

WILLEMSTAD – Interest group CASHA has voiced strong criticism of Curaçao’s current tourism model, arguing that the growth of large-scale resorts is delivering limited benefits to the local economy.

The organization made the remarks in response to recent statements by Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association (CHATA) regarding the future of the sector. CASHA described those statements as “vague” and said more fundamental decisions are needed about the direction of tourism development.

According to CASHA, a significant portion of tourist spending remains within resort properties and does not sufficiently circulate in the wider economy. The group also pointed to tax incentives and exemptions granted to large resorts, which it says further limit the financial return to Curaçao.

CASHA is advocating for a shift toward smaller-scale accommodations and locally owned businesses. It argues that this approach would lead to a broader distribution of income and enhance the overall visitor experience by connecting tourists more directly with the island’s culture and communities.

The organization emphasized that tourism growth is important, but warned that its current structure risks sidelining local entrepreneurs and reducing the sector’s overall contribution to the economy.
