Caribbean Organizations Have Until June 1 to Apply for Slavery Legacy Project Funding

Local, Caribbean, The Netherlands, | By Correspondent May 8, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Organizations across the Caribbean part of the Kingdom of the Netherlands have until June 1 to apply for funding for social initiatives focused on the trans-Atlantic slavery past, with grants of up to $500,000 available for larger projects.

The funding opportunity is part of a subsidy scheme aimed at supporting foundations and associations working on projects related to awareness, healing, education, and public understanding of the legacy of slavery.

According to the Dutch government’s subsidy framework, medium-sized and large-scale initiatives can qualify for grants ranging from $25,000 to $500,000, depending on the size and long-term impact of the project.

Eligible projects include public gatherings, cultural events, exhibitions, performances, educational programs, and other community-based initiatives that contribute to greater awareness and understanding of the history and ongoing effects of slavery.

One of the key conditions is that projects must directly benefit descendants of enslaved people and demonstrate long-term value for the community.

The current application round closes on June 1 at 5:00 p.m. Dutch time.

The subsidy program is part of the measures introduced following the formal apology delivered by Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte on December 19, 2022, on behalf of the Dutch government for the country’s slavery past.

For the Caribbean part of the Kingdom, a total budget of €29.3 million has been allocated under the program, spread across eight application rounds over three years.

Applications can be submitted through the Dutch Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment’s subsidy portal, managed by Uitvoering Van Beleid.

For Caribbean-based applicants, additional information is also available through the dedicated information platform known as Legacy to Future Funds, which provides guidance on the subsidy process and available funding opportunities.

Information about the subsidy program is available in Dutch, English, Papiamentu, and Papiamento, making it accessible to organizations throughout the Dutch Caribbean.

The funding is intended to support projects that preserve memory, strengthen education, and help communities continue addressing the historical and social impact of trans-Atlantic slavery.
