Bomb Threat Scare Disrupts Operations at Curaçao Airport

Local, | By Correspondent April 9, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Operations at Curaçao International Airport were temporarily disrupted yesterday morning after a possible explosive was detected in a piece of luggage during routine screening.

The incident occurred at approximately 9:50 a.m., when security screening machines flagged suspicious contents. Authorities immediately activated standard bomb threat procedures.

The Government of Curaçao, through the National Crisis Coordinator and the Korps Politie Curaçao (KPC), took control of the situation to carry out further inspections.

As a precaution, access to the airport was temporarily restricted, and the departures hall was evacuated. Passengers were directed to wait outside while authorities conducted checks.

At 11:53 a.m., police officially declared the situation safe, allowing airport operator Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP) to resume normal operations. Entry and exit to the airport were reopened, and flights gradually resumed.

Several airlines were affected by delays, including Divi Divi Air, ZAir, Avianca, Global, and Laser. Flights operated by Copa Airlines and Winair were diverted to Aruba during the disruption but are expected to resume operations. Meanwhile, American Airlines and JetBlue experienced delays in opening their check-in counters.

Curaçao Airport Partners stated that it is working closely with airlines, immigration, and security services to process affected passengers as efficiently as possible and minimize further disruption.

Authorities thanked the public for their cooperation and patience during the incident.
