Blue Wave World Cup Run Gives Curaçao Massive Global Tourism Exposure

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao’s historic World Cup campaign generated an estimated 29.5 billion in combined media reach and helped put the island before audiences across North America, Latin America and Europe, according to new figures presented by the Curaçao Tourist Board.

The tourism impact of the Blue Wave was highlighted separately by CTB during its State of the Tourism Industry press conference, providing one of the first detailed assessments of the international exposure Curaçao received from the national football team's World Cup journey.

CTB measured the period from Curaçao’s World Cup qualification in November 2025 through July 2026, covering the buildup to and participation in the tournament.

According to the presentation, Curaçao generated approximately 30,500 earned-media placements across North America, Latin America and Europe, producing a combined estimated media reach of approximately 29.5 billion.

The impact extended far beyond traditional television, newspapers and online news coverage.

CTB recorded approximately 584,000 social-media mentions associated with the campaign, generating an estimated 84 million engagements across the three regions between November 2025 and July 2026.

The attention also translated into substantial online visibility for Curaçao as a destination.

CTB reported 3.75 million sessions on curacao.com during the campaign, while Curaçao generated an additional 83.5 million Google Search impressions.

Those figures demonstrate how the Blue Wave's historic World Cup appearance became more than a sporting achievement. Curaçao’s name, identity and imagery were repeatedly exposed to potential travelers in some of the island’s most important and fastest-growing tourism markets.

CTB also used the World Cup moment for direct tourism promotion.

More than 15 events were organized across eight markets, attracting more than 2,000 people. Among the largest was the Houston Blue Wave Village on June 14, which attracted approximately 1,200 attendees.

The international media campaign included 47 executive interviews. Curaçao received broadcast coverage from major outlets including NBC Nightly News, Telemundo Deportes and CNN Brasil, in addition to seven other television stations.

The effect was even visible in artificial-intelligence platforms.

According to CTB, Curaçao’s presence in AI-generated answers from services including ChatGPT, Gemini and Google AI increased by 10.6 percent during the tournament period. The number of mentions rose from approximately 810 to 896 per month.

The World Cup exposure came at a particularly favorable moment for Curaçao's tourism industry. Through August 2026, the island had welcomed 578,814 stayover visitors, 10 percent more than during the same period in 2025.

Several of the markets where Curaçao received World Cup exposure are also important tourism markets. The United States accounted for 153,838 stayover visitors through August, while Colombia contributed 39,335, Brazil 29,405 and Argentina 27,220. Argentina was the fastest-growing major market, increasing 75 percent year over year.

The figures presented by CTB do not establish how many visitors traveled to Curaçao specifically because of the Blue Wave or how much additional tourism revenue can be directly attributed to the World Cup. They do, however, quantify the enormous international visibility generated by Curaçao's participation.

For a destination competing for attention against much larger Caribbean tourism markets, the national team's historic achievement effectively became a global marketing platform: millions of people who may previously have known little about Curaçao repeatedly encountered the island's name through football, television, social media, online searches and international news coverage.

The challenge for Curaçao's tourism industry will now be converting that unprecedented visibility into lasting destination awareness and future visits.
