Be Aware of the Rules of the Game and the Risk of Addiction

Local, Entertainment, | By Press release March 31, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Continuing its focus on responsible gambling, the Curaçao Gaming Authority (CGA) reaffirms its commitment to creating a safe, sustainable, transparent, and responsible gambling environment in Curaçao. This time, the CGA highlights gambling behavior, with particular emphasis on the warning slogan: “Gambling can be addictive. Do it responsibly.”

Within the context of a recent study conducted in 2023 on gambling behavior in Curaçao, it was found that:
● 95% of people who gamble indicate that they do so to win money
● 38% do it as a way to meet with friends
● 34% state that they gamble for pleasure
● 5% do it to reduce stress
● 9% do it because they feel bored

Based on the study’s findings, it can be concluded that most people who gamble in Curaçao are primarily motivated by the desire to win money.

When gambling becomes a method to earn money rather than a form of entertainment, it can make individuals vulnerable. A vulnerable person is someone who lacks control, or sufficient control, over their gambling behavior. This can lead to addiction to one or more forms of gambling and may result in harm to themselves or others.

For example, a person may unconsciously develop the habit of chasing losses in an effort to recover money or become wealthy. It may also occur that an individual spends increasing amounts of time gambling and invests more money, including funds they cannot afford to lose.

To minimize these risks, the CGA continues to inform and raise awareness within the community about the potential dangers associated with gambling. The authority encourages everyone who participates in gambling to do so responsibly.

Responsible gambling means being aware of the rules of the game and the risk of addiction, and taking measures to prevent and minimize negative consequences.

In summary, Responsible Gambling (RG) is an essential part of gambling legislation in Curaçao. It promotes safe, informed, and controlled gambling behavior. Players are encouraged to understand the risks, set limits on the time and money they spend, gamble for enjoyment rather than profit, recognize early signs of problematic behavior, and make use of available protection measures.

Awareness of responsible gambling helps individuals maintain control and balance in their daily lives. It also contributes to early recognition of risk signals, enabling people to seek professional help in time through Fundashon Maneho pa Adikshon (FMA).

Gambling can be addictive. Do it responsibly.
