THE HAGUE – Aruba's Prime Minister Mike Eman has attended his final meeting of the Kingdom Council of Ministers in The Hague, marking an important milestone in his departure from political leadership and the approaching end of a remarkable chapter in Aruba's political history.

During his farewell address on Friday, Eman emphasized the importance of cooperation within the Kingdom of the Netherlands and called for stronger relationships among its four constituent countries: Aruba, Curaçao, Sint Maarten, and the Netherlands.

His departure also marks the conclusion of a political tradition spanning five consecutive generations of the Eman family, whose members have played influential roles in Aruba's political development.

Although he is stepping down as prime minister, Eman indicated that his commitment to the common interests of the Kingdom will continue beyond his time in office.

A Farewell Focused on Kingdom Cooperation

During his final appearance at the Kingdom Council of Ministers, Eman reflected on the importance of maintaining constructive relations between the Caribbean countries and the Netherlands.

He stressed that cooperation within the Kingdom remains essential for addressing shared challenges and creating opportunities for future generations.

The Kingdom Council of Ministers is responsible for decisions concerning matters that affect the Kingdom as a whole. It consists of Dutch ministers and the ministers plenipotentiary representing Aruba, Curaçao, and Sint Maarten.

For Eman, his final participation provided an opportunity to emphasize the value of dialogue, mutual understanding, and cooperation among the countries.

His farewell message reflected his longstanding interest in the constitutional and political relationship between Aruba and the Netherlands.

Five Generations of Eman Family Political Involvement

Eman's departure represents more than the end of an individual political career.

It also closes a historic chapter in which five consecutive generations of the Eman family played a role in Aruba's political life.

The family has been closely associated with the island's political development, including its pursuit of greater autonomy within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Mike Eman himself has been a prominent figure in Aruban politics for decades and has served as prime minister during different periods.

His political career has been characterized by his involvement in debates concerning Aruba's economic development, governance, and relationship with the Netherlands.

The end of his premiership therefore carries historical significance for Aruba, where the Eman family has maintained a political presence across generations.

Making Way for a New Generation

Eman announced in June that he would step down as Aruba's head of government effective January 1, 2027.

At the time, he explained that his decision was partly motivated by a desire to create opportunities for a new generation of political leaders.

He also cited personal considerations, saying that after decades in politics, he wanted to devote more time to his wife, family, and life outside the responsibilities of the premiership.

His decision reflects a planned transition rather than an immediate departure from office.

With the January 1 date approaching, his final participation in the Kingdom Council of Ministers represents one of the closing moments of his tenure.

Commitment to the Kingdom Will Continue

Despite his decision to leave the premiership, Eman made clear that he does not intend to abandon his involvement in matters affecting Aruba and the wider Kingdom.

He indicated that he would continue contributing to the common good and supporting cooperation among the Kingdom's countries.

His remarks suggest that while his formal responsibilities as head of government are coming to an end, he intends to remain engaged in public affairs.

The transition will also provide Aruba with an opportunity to begin a new political chapter under different leadership.

For the Kingdom, Eman's departure means saying farewell to a prime minister who has participated in discussions about the relationship between its European and Caribbean members for many years.

As Aruba prepares for the leadership change on January 1, 2027, Eman's farewell in The Hague serves as both a personal conclusion to decades of political service and a symbolic end to five generations of Eman family involvement in the island's political leadership.
