Aqualectra Warns Public About Fake Announcement Circulating on Social Media Regarding Power Outages

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao's utility company Aqualectra has issued a public warning about a false announcement circulating on social media concerning temporary electricity interruptions, urging residents to verify information before sharing it.

In an official statement issued on Thursday, October 15, Aqualectra said it had become aware of a message circulating online that appeared to provide information about a temporary electricity switching schedule, locally known as schakel.

The circulating message reportedly states that the temporary arrangement will begin on Friday, October 17. However, October 17 falls on a Saturday, while Friday is October 16.

Aqualectra emphasized that the announcement did not originate from the company and should not be regarded as official information.

The utility is asking residents to exercise caution when receiving messages about electricity interruptions, particularly those circulating through social media or messaging platforms.

According to Aqualectra, all official announcements concerning electricity supply, outages, and operational developments are published on its official Facebook page.

The company encouraged the public to consult that page to verify whether information they receive is accurate.

The warning comes as Aqualectra continues working to restore stability to Curaçao's electricity supply following recent technical difficulties affecting its generating capacity.

In its statement, the company confirmed that technicians are still working to repair the remaining generating units that are out of service.

Aqualectra said it remains committed to communicating openly and regularly with the public while these technical repairs continue.

The company acknowledged that electricity interruptions can cause inconvenience and emphasized that it will continue providing updates whenever significant developments occur.

According to the utility, the electricity situation is being monitored daily as efforts continue to restore a stable power supply.

Aqualectra also pledged to keep residents informed about important changes or disruptions through its official communication channels.

The company stressed that its warning about the false announcement should not be interpreted as a statement that no further electricity interruptions will occur.

Rather, the message is intended to ensure that residents rely on verified information instead of unconfirmed announcements circulating online.

With technicians still working to return the remaining generating units to service, Aqualectra urged the public to remain attentive to official updates and avoid spreading unverified information that could create unnecessary confusion.
