Aqualectra Warns of Possible Power Outages as Electricity Supply Falls Short of Demand

Local, | By Correspondent October 6, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Aqualectra has warned that parts of Curaçao could experience power outages Tuesday afternoon and evening because available electricity generation is not sufficient to meet expected demand.

In an announcement issued Tuesday, October 6, the utility company described the electricity situation as “delicate” and said it may have to temporarily switch off electricity in different areas to keep the island’s power supply and generation capacity under control.

According to Aqualectra, extensive cooperation with different sectors of the economy to manage electricity consumption has not been enough to close the gap between supply and demand.

If conditions remain unchanged, Aqualectra expects that controlled outages may be necessary between approximately 2:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. Tuesday and 5:00 a.m. Wednesday.

The company said that if an area loses electricity as part of the load-management measures, the outage should last no longer than three hours.

Aqualectra did not identify which neighborhoods could be affected or provide a schedule indicating when individual areas might lose power.

The utility urged residents and businesses to follow its official communication channels for updates as the situation develops.

The warning comes as Aqualectra attempts to balance available generation capacity with electricity demand and avoid a wider disruption to Curaçao’s power system.
