Aqualectra Warns of Possible Power Outages Across Curaçao From November 5 to 8

Local, | By Correspondent November 5, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Utility company Aqualectra has issued a warning to residents and businesses across Curaçao about possible electricity interruptions between Thursday, November 5, and Sunday, November 8, 2026, as the island's power supply situation is expected to remain critical over the coming four days.

According to the company, the electricity network is facing challenging conditions that could make temporary power interruptions necessary, particularly during the evening and nighttime hours.

Aqualectra explained that it may have to implement controlled power interruptions, locally known as "schakel," to manage electricity demand and maintain the stability of the power grid.

The company acknowledged the inconvenience this situation could cause households and businesses and assured the public that every possible measure is being taken to minimize disruptions.

Additional Measures to Reduce Pressure on the Grid

Aqualectra indicated that it is making use of available battery storage capacity wherever possible to support electricity supply during periods of increased demand.

The company is also receiving assistance from a gas turbine operated by Curaçao Refinery Utilities (CRU), providing additional generating capacity to help stabilize the system.

Furthermore, several companies are using their own electricity generators to reduce their dependence on Aqualectra's network.

These combined measures are intended to lower demand on the public electricity grid and reduce the likelihood of widespread interruptions.

However, Aqualectra warned that despite these efforts, temporary power cuts may still be unavoidable.

Power Interruptions Could Last Up to Three Hours

If controlled power interruptions become necessary, affected households could be without electricity for a maximum of three hours at a time.

Aqualectra emphasized that the situation remains unpredictable, making it difficult to announce in advance which neighborhoods will experience outages and at what times.

The company explained that electricity supply conditions can fluctuate, requiring operational decisions based on the circumstances at any given moment.

Aqualectra said it will make every effort to ensure that households experiencing an electricity interruption during one evening will not be affected again the following day.

This approach is intended to distribute the inconvenience as fairly as possible among different neighborhoods.

Residents Urged to Follow Official Updates

Aqualectra is encouraging residents and businesses to remain alert to announcements through its official communication channels.

The company will continue providing updates as the electricity supply situation develops over the coming days.

Although additional generating capacity and battery support are being used, Aqualectra has not guaranteed that power interruptions can be avoided.

Residents are therefore advised to prepare for the possibility of temporary outages, particularly during the evening hours.

The warning remains in effect for the period from November 5 through November 8, 2026, as Aqualectra continues working to maintain the stability of Curaçao's electricity supply.
