Aqualectra Targets 70% Renewable Energy as Curaçao and Netherlands Strengthen Energy Partnership

Local, | By Correspondent May 15, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Aqualectra says Curaçao is making steady progress toward its goal of generating 70 percent of the island’s energy consumption from renewable sources, a transition the company says is being made possible in part through support from the Netherlands.

During the official visit of Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten to Curaçao, Jetten and Curaçao Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas jointly unveiled the artwork “The Bridge” at the entrance of the Hòfi Mooi Battery Park.

The artwork symbolizes the cooperation and joint commitment of Curaçao and the Netherlands toward the energy transition within the Kingdom of the Netherlands.

Battery Park Seen as Major Milestone

Before the unveiling ceremony, Neysa Isenia, CEO of Integrated Utility Holding (IUH), said the Hòfi Mooi battery park demonstrates what can be achieved when countries and institutions work together with determination toward shared goals.

According to Isenia, the battery storage facility represents an important milestone in Curaçao’s efforts to make its energy supply more sustainable beginning in 2025.

“This development shows what is possible when Curaçao and the Netherlands jointly invest in innovation and future-oriented solutions,” she stated.

The battery park forms part of broader efforts to modernize Curaçao’s electricity infrastructure and reduce dependence on fossil fuels, while increasing the use of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind power.

Dutch Support Highlighted

Isenia also expressed gratitude for the cooperation and confidence shown by the Netherlands, including support through funding mechanisms such as the SDE++ Fund.

According to IUH, Dutch financial support demonstrates the Netherlands’ continued commitment to assisting Curaçao in its energy transition and sustainability goals in the coming years.

The energy transition has become increasingly important for Curaçao as the island seeks to lower energy costs, strengthen energy security, reduce carbon emissions, and improve resilience against global fuel price fluctuations.

Curaçao has significantly expanded renewable energy production over the past decade, particularly through wind energy projects, battery storage systems, and investments in grid modernization. Authorities view the transition as essential both for economic stability and climate resilience.

The visit to the Hòfi Mooi Battery Park formed part of a broader program during Jetten’s visit focused on sustainability, regional cooperation, infrastructure, and the future development of the Caribbean parts of the Kingdom.
