WILLEMSTAD – Electricity service across Curaçao has returned to normal following Saturday’s power interruptions, utility company Aqualectra announced shortly after midnight Sunday.
According to Aqualectra, electricity has been restored to all households and the outlook for Sunday indicates that the island’s power supply should remain stable.
“All homes have electricity again,” the company said in an update issued at 12:26 a.m. on Sunday, August 16.
Aqualectra acknowledged that the situation experienced by customers was unpleasant and thanked the public for its patience during what it described as difficult hours.
The problems followed warnings from the utility that Curaçao could face an electricity capacity shortage Saturday evening due to a combination of high demand and reduced wind-generated electricity.
Aqualectra had projected that declining wind speeds would significantly reduce output from the island’s wind turbines at the same time that electricity consumption was expected to increase during the evening.
The company consequently implemented temporary power interruptions in different areas to maintain the stability of the electricity grid and prevent individual neighborhoods from experiencing prolonged outages.
Aqualectra now says the situation has normalized and current projections indicate that electricity supply will remain stable throughout Sunday.
