Local, | By Press release June 1, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Aqualectra has officially unveiled a large-scale blue lighting and decoration project across downtown Willemstad to celebrate Curaçao’s historic participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

As excitement continues to build ahead of the national team's debut on football’s biggest stage, the utility company has transformed parts of Punda and Otrobanda into a sea of blue, reflecting the pride and patriotism being felt across the island.

The official inauguration took place on Thursday, May 28, during activities held in both districts. The decorative lighting stretches from the entrance of Otrobanda near Aqualectra’s headquarters in Rif to the entrance of Punda near the traffic lights in Pietermaai. Major thoroughfares in both Punda and Otrobanda have been adorned with festive lighting, while Brion Square and Wilhelmina Square feature decorations in the colors of Curaçao’s national flag.

The initiative is part of Aqualectra’s broader commitment to supporting the community and celebrating one of the most significant moments in the island’s sporting history.

In addition to the decorative lighting, both public squares now feature small football fields where children and aspiring young footballers can practice and play. A large screen has also been installed at Wilhelmina Square, where football-related videos will be shown throughout the World Cup period.

Speaking during the inauguration ceremony, Neysa Isenia, Director of Integrated Utility Holding (IUH), highlighted the importance of bringing the community together during such a historic occasion.

She said Curaçao’s qualification for the World Cup demonstrates that a small island united by a common goal can achieve extraordinary things and encouraged residents to continue dreaming big.

Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas also addressed the gathering and invited residents and visitors to enjoy the festive atmosphere in downtown Willemstad throughout the World Cup season.

According to the prime minister, the government has organized a series of activities under the banner of the “Blue Nation” campaign to celebrate the national team's participation and encourage community involvement.

Aqualectra is encouraging families and residents from across the island to visit Punda and Otrobanda, enjoy the decorations, participate in the football activities, and share in the unique atmosphere created for the tournament.

The company also called on the public to help protect the decorations and lighting installations so that everyone can enjoy them during what is expected to be a memorable and historic World Cup campaign for Curaçao.

With blue lights illuminating the heart of Willemstad and national pride at an all-time high, the celebrations reflect the excitement surrounding a moment that many residents once thought impossible: seeing Curaçao compete on the world’s biggest football stage.
