WILLEMSTAD – Aqualectra says its new power plant in Salu is expected to become operational by the end of 2026, marking another major step in the modernization of Curaçao’s energy infrastructure.
The utility confirmed the timeline in its 2025 annual report, stating that the new facility will be a 40-megawatt diesel-powered plant designed to strengthen electricity generation capacity and improve grid reliability.
The project forms part of Aqualectra’s broader strategy to modernize the island’s energy system following years of challenges, including blackouts, capacity shortages, and aging infrastructure.
The contract for the new power plant was signed in 2024, and construction is now progressing as part of the company’s wider investment program.
According to Aqualectra, the new plant is designed with future flexibility in mind and can later be adapted to operate on more sustainable fuel alternatives once they become available in the region.
The company says this dual-purpose approach will help provide immediate production capacity while supporting Curaçao’s long-term transition toward cleaner energy.
The Salu plant is one of several major infrastructure projects underway under Aqualectra’s modernization plan.
In its annual report, the utility also revealed that it invested a record 233 million guilders in infrastructure during 2025, covering electricity generation, network upgrades, and renewable energy projects.
The company says these investments are aimed at creating a more stable, resilient, and future-proof energy system for the island.
