Aqualectra Cuts Power Costs as Major Investments Drive Profit and Fuel Transition

Local, | By Correspondent May 8, 2026

WILLEMSTAD – Aqualectra says its transition to cheaper fuel sources and increased wind energy production has reduced electricity production costs, allowing it to lower electricity tariffs in 2025.

According to the utility’s latest annual report, electricity prices were reduced by nearly 7 cents per kilowatt-hour last year as a result of lower operational costs.

The company says the combination of fuel diversification and renewable energy expansion has improved efficiency and reduced reliance on expensive fossil fuels.

To support its long-term infrastructure strategy, Aqualectra secured new financing agreements in 2025 worth 521 million guilders and nearly 80 million U.S. dollars. The company also received a 63 million euro subsidy from the Kingdom of the Netherlands for investments in the electricity grid.

Aqualectra confirmed that its new 40-megawatt power plant in Salu is expected to become operational by the end of 2026. The plant is intended to further strengthen the reliability of Curaçao’s electricity supply and can later be adapted for cleaner fuel alternatives.

Financially, the utility ended 2025 with a net profit of more than 24 million guilders, roughly in line with the previous year, signaling continued financial stability as it moves into its next strategic phase.
