WILLEMSTAD - Mr. S.A. (Sigmar) Carmelia has been appointed President of the Joint Court of Justice. The appointment will take effect on the date the Royal Decree is signed. The Kingdom Council of Ministers approved the nomination following a proposal by the State Secretary for Justice and Security, Van Bruggen.
Mr. Carmelia has been a (deputy) member of the Joint Court since 2014. Prior to that, as part of his legal training, he served as a deputy judge and subdistrict court judge at the Gelderland District Court, and worked as a lawyer and legal advisor at the Netherlands Institute for Human Rights.
He succeeds Mr. Mauritsz de Kort, who served as President of the Joint Court until November 4, 2025. Mr. De Kort has since been appointed Governor of Curaçao.
