WILLEMSTAD – Former Member of Parliament Ana Maria Pauletta has welcomed the government's decision to provide 2.5 million guilders to Fundashon Kas Popular (FKP) for social housing maintenance but says questions remain about why many homes have yet to be repaired.
The funding announcement was made by Minister of Traffic, Transport and Urban Planning Charles Cooper, who said the money will be used to continue maintenance work on government-owned social housing units.
The development follows recent criticism from Pauletta, who publicly raised concerns about reports of neglected maintenance at social housing properties. She had called on FKP to provide greater transparency regarding the use of available resources and the status of repair projects.
While expressing satisfaction that funding has now been made available, Pauletta argues that financial support alone does not answer concerns from residents who have been waiting for repairs.
According to Pauletta, FKP should explain why certain maintenance issues remain unresolved despite previous resources and ongoing complaints from tenants. She has also invited residents experiencing problems with overdue repairs to contact her directly.
The debate over the management and upkeep of social housing has been ongoing for several years. Tenants have frequently complained about leaking roofs, structural deterioration, and delays in maintenance work, raising broader questions about the condition of the island's social housing inventory.
With new funding now being released, attention is likely to shift toward how quickly repairs can be completed and whether the additional resources will result in visible improvements for residents living in government-supported housing.
