WILLEMSTAD – A traffic control operation on Schottegatweg Noord has revealed a striking level of non-compliance, with every driver stopped found to have run a red light.
The inspection, carried out by the Unit Speciale Taken (UST), took place Wednesday afternoon between 4:50 p.m. and 5:55 p.m. near the intersection with Snipweg, a busy junction during the evening rush hour.
According to UST figures, a total of 26 vehicles were checked, and in all cases drivers were issued fines for ignoring a red traffic signal. This means that 100 percent of the motorists stopped during the operation committed the same violation.
Authorities describe running a red light as one of the most dangerous traffic offenses, significantly increasing the risk of serious accidents at intersections.
The targeted control was part of ongoing efforts to address this type of behavior, which officials say occurs regularly and poses a major threat to road safety on the island.
