WILLEMSTAD – Additional security measures will be implemented in the coming days to better protect the former St. Elisabeth Hospital (SEHOS) complex following a fire in the eastern wing of the property last weekend.
The fire department responded quickly to the incident, preventing more extensive damage to the former hospital complex. Police and fire authorities are investigating the cause of the blaze and will release their findings separately.
Otrabanda Village expressed its appreciation for the fire department’s rapid response and emphasized the importance of preserving as much of the former hospital as possible. The complex has significant cultural and historical value and is located within Otrobanda’s protected historic cityscape.
Several measures are now being introduced to improve security on and around the property.
The grounds will be thoroughly cleaned in the coming days, while vegetation will be removed, particularly along Pater Euwensweg. This is intended to improve visibility around the complex and make surveillance easier.
Lighting towers and security cameras will also be installed at strategic locations.
Beginning September 1, security at the property is being reinforced with a second security company. According to Otrabanda Village, the measures were introduced partly on the advice of police and in response to increasing nuisance and unwanted activity in and around the site.
The organization said the combination of improved visibility, additional lighting, camera surveillance and expanded security should reduce the risk of further incidents.
Otrabanda Village said the objective is to ensure that the former SEHOS remains properly protected while plans for the historic complex move forward.
