“A Clean Curaçao and Respect for Everyone” as a Foundation for Sustainable Development

Local, Opinion, Op-Ed, | By Luigi Faneyte April 23, 2026

Curaçao is facing a crucial moment in which economic development, quality of life, and international reputation go hand in hand. With this vision, I would like to propose to the Council of Ministers—our government—the formulation of an action plan under the motto: “A Clean Curaçao and Respect for Everyone,” focusing on cleanliness, safety, and respect as core values within our community and for all visitors.

Tourism is one of the main pillars of our economy and an important source of income for many people on the island. However, to sustain and further develop this sector, it is essential to manage the “asset value” of our country with care and responsibility. In this regard, cleanliness, safety, and environmental protection must take priority.

Sustainable development also requires responsible urban development, structured with a long-term vision spanning many years, in harmony with our natural environment and with respect for our surroundings. Similarly, the development of traffic and public transportation must align with economic growth—such as tourism—urban expansion, and environmental preservation to ensure efficient and sustainable mobility.

The proposed action plan should include:

·         Structural improvements in public cleanliness, including waste management, maintenance of public spaces (such as our beaches), and awareness campaigns

·         Strengthening safety, both preventive and through law enforcement, to ensure a secure environment for everyone

·         Promotion of mutual respect between residents and visitors to foster a culture of coexistence

·         Environmental protection, with a focus on sustainability and preservation of our natural resources

·         Responsible urban development, with structured planning and a long-term vision in harmony with nature

·         Development of traffic and public transportation aligned with economic and urban growth, while respecting the environment

Consistent implementation of these measures will directly contribute to an improved quality of life in Curaçao and strengthen our position as an attractive tourist destination. A clean, safe, and well-managed country increases its value and creates a solid foundation for long-term economic growth.

This initiative should also be seen as a clear call to action for government, the private sector, and the community to take shared responsibility. Only through collaboration can we ensure that Curaçao remains a clean, safe island where respect exists for both residents and visitors—for everyone.
