375th Anniversary of Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Discussed During Visit to Governor

WILLEMSTAD – A delegation of the Sephardic Jewish community on Curaçao paid a visit to the Governor of Curaçao, Mauritsz de Kort, on Monday, February 23, 2026, to discuss the upcoming 375th anniversary of the Mikvé Israel-Emanuel Synagogue.

The delegation was led by Mali Blanken-de Waard, chair of the synagogue board, and included Debora D’Amico and Ben Heyer. During the meeting, the Governor was informed about the preparations for the anniversary of Mikvé Israel-Emanuel, which is recognized as the oldest synagogue in continuous use in the Western Hemisphere.

The representatives highlighted the historical and cultural significance of the milestone and reflected on the long-standing role of the Jewish community in the development and history of Curaçao. Attention was also given to the broader meaning of the synagogue as a symbol of religious freedom and cultural continuity on the island.

The meeting took place in a constructive and cordial atmosphere, with mutual appreciation expressed for the rich cultural and religious diversity that characterizes Curaçao. The anniversary is expected to mark an important moment for both the Jewish community and the wider island society, underscoring Curaçao’s centuries-old tradition of tolerance and multicultural coexistence.
