€208 Million in Social Impact: Volunteer Debt Assistance Strengthens Caribbean Dutch Households

| By Correspondent March 3, 2026

THE HAGUE – Volunteer-based debt assistance in the Netherlands generated an estimated €208 million in microeconomic social impact in 2024, according to a new evaluation report. Caribbean Dutch households are among those positively affected through the work of Ocan within the national alliance.

The largest financial benefits were seen by municipalities and health insurers, as early intervention reduces reliance on social welfare programs and healthcare services. By helping families organize finances, apply for benefits, and prevent debt escalation, volunteers reduce long-term public costs.

For Caribbean Dutch residents, early support can prevent situations from escalating into formal debt restructuring processes, which are often complex and lengthy. The report notes that reducing financial stress also lowers health-related costs and improves overall well-being.

On average, the microeconomic impact per person assisted was estimated at approximately €3,400.
