WILLEMSTAD - KLM expects that Schiphol's measures will not affect flights to and from the Caribbean and Suriname. Regional manager Dirk Buitelaar confirms this to the Dutch news site NU.cw.
Due to the shortage of security personnel at Schiphol, the airport has decided to process a maximum number of departing travelers per day from 7 July. The airport will cancel a large number of flights from that day until the end of the month.
“KLM endorses the need to take additional measures. At the same time, we emphasize that the forced reduction of the number of departing passengers is highly undesirable and should be a one-off and short-lived," said the airline. "It cannot be the case that the users of the airport are structurally responsible for Schiphol's capacity problems."
The airline believes that it is better to intervene now than to take ad hoc measures. This means that KLM will cooperate in limiting the number of passengers departing locally in order to reduce the pressure on security personnel. There will be a limit to the number of tickets that are still sold departing from Schiphol during the peak period. This measure comes on top of KLM's existing actions, such as spreading flights.
"With the current information that we have received from Schiphol, it is expected that it will not be necessary to cancel existing bookings on a large scale," concludes the airline. “KLM holds Schiphol responsible for the financial impact of the measures.”
