Curaçao popular in the Netherlands despite economic challenges

AMSTERDAM - Despite high inflation and a struggling economy, the Dutch remain eager travelers, with Curaçao being one of the favorite destinations for the spring break.

Travel agencies report significant increases in bookings compared to last year, indicating that many people are not letting the economic situation influence their vacation plans.

The Dutch Association of Travel Agents (ANVR) observes a general increase of 15 percent in bookings for this year, with sun destinations such as the Canary Islands and Curaçao being particularly popular. The growing interest in Curaçao is confirmed by travel organizations like TUI, noting that alongside the Canary Islands, Curaçao and Cape Verde are high on the list for sun enthusiasts.

Corendon also reports a positive trend with a 20 percent increase in summer bookings compared to last year, with Curaçao being one of the top destinations. "Curaçao is doing very well," says the travel concern, pointing to a recovery to pre-pandemic levels.

This trend seems to come at the expense of vacations within the country, where fewer Dutch opt for accommodation. Holiday parks such as Roompot and Landal Greenparks expect a spring break similar to previous years, without full bookings.

The Netherlands Board of Tourism & Conventions (NBTC) determines, through research, that the Dutch increasingly prefer an international vacation, and Curaçao benefits from this trend. The interest in the island's sun, sea, and culture remains strong despite economic challenges.
