Public Companies Increase Bitcoin Holdings as Corporate Adoption Expands

| By Correspondent March 10, 2026

A growing number of publicly traded companies are adding Bitcoin to their balance sheets, signaling continued institutional adoption of the world’s largest cryptocurrency.

A recent analysis by digital-asset research outlet TechGaged indicates that 148 publicly listed companies now hold Bitcoin, collectively controlling about 1.16 million BTC, valued at more than $80 billion at recent market prices.

Independent trackers of corporate Bitcoin treasuries report similar figures. Public companies are estimated to hold more than 1.13 million BTC combined, confirming the rapid expansion of corporate participation in the digital-asset market.

With Bitcoin’s total supply capped at 21 million coins, corporate treasuries now account for roughly 5% of the cryptocurrency’s eventual supply, underscoring the growing influence of institutional investors in the ecosystem.

Corporate holdings highly concentrated

Despite the increasing number of companies participating, Bitcoin ownership among corporations remains heavily concentrated.

The U.S. technology firm Strategy Inc. holds by far the largest share. Recent reports show the company owns 738,731 BTC, making it the world’s largest publicly traded corporate holder of Bitcoin.

That amount represents a substantial portion of all Bitcoin held by public companies.

Strategy began accumulating Bitcoin in 2020 under executive chairman Michael Saylor, transforming the software company into what many analysts describe as a “Bitcoin treasury company.”

Other major corporate holders

Beyond Strategy, several companies have also built significant Bitcoin reserves.

These include firms involved in cryptocurrency mining and digital-asset services such as MARA Holdings, along with other crypto-focused financial companies and firms that have adopted Bitcoin as a long-term treasury asset.

Companies pursuing Bitcoin treasury strategies typically fall into three categories:

• cryptocurrency mining companies
• crypto-native financial firms
• traditional companies using Bitcoin as a strategic reserve asset

Growing institutional adoption

While the largest companies dominate total holdings, the broader dataset shows a growing number of smaller publicly traded firms experimenting with Bitcoin allocations as part of their treasury strategies.

Corporate interest in Bitcoin is developing alongside broader changes in financial markets. Some analysts argue that companies see the cryptocurrency as a scarce digital asset that can diversify corporate reserves during periods of economic uncertainty.

At the same time, the heavy concentration of corporate holdings among a small number of companies suggests that the trend is still in its early stages.

For now, Strategy’s dominant position continues to shape the corporate Bitcoin landscape, with its holdings exceeding those of most other publicly traded companies combined.
