Update: New coalition in the making: Intent agreement signed between MFK, KEM, and Independent MP

Main news | By Correspondent August 21, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - A significant shift in Curaçao's political landscape seems to be unfolding with the signing of an Intent Agreement between political parties MFK, KEM, independent Parliament Member Zita Jesus-Leito, and Corinne Djaoen Genaro. However, the formation of a new government is not yet confirmed, as Governor Lucille George-Wout's approval is still required to move forward.

The agreement was reportedly reached on Tuesday between MFK, KEM, and Jesus-Leito, with Djaoen Genaro officially joining the coalition on Wednesday after splitting from her former party, PNP. This new alliance would give the coalition 11 seats in Parliament, securing a minimal majority needed to govern.

As a result of this new political development, three PNP ministers—Ruisandro Cijntje, Ornelio Kid Martina, and Mini—have resigned from their positions and submitted their resignations to the Governor.

The decision for MFK to part ways with PNP was made on Wednesday morning. According to MFK, the split was driven by a loss of confidence in their former coalition partner. The political future of Curaçao now rests on Governor George-Wout’s decision, which will determine whether this new coalition can officially form the next government.
