Traffic Accidents Continue to Rise in Curaçao, but Fewer Injuries Reported

Main news | By Correspondent February 21, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – The number of traffic accidents in Curaçao increased again in 2024, continuing the trend of previous years. According to the latest data, over 11,000 incidents were recorded—nearly 300 more than in 2023. However, the number of injuries decreased, with almost 800 fewer victims compared to the 3,000-plus injuries reported in 2023.

More Vehicles Involved in Accidents

Data from ForenSys shows that vehicular incidents accounted for nearly 95% of all registered cases in 2024. The most common type of accident was rear-end collisions, followed by side-impact crashes and collisions while reversing.

The number of vehicles involved in accidents also increased. In 2024, over 20,000 vehicles were involved in crashes—nearly 50% more than the total number of registered incidents, indicating that most accidents involved multiple vehicles.

It remains unclear whether the total number of vehicles on the road has increased, as recent statistics do not include this information. However, in 2023, there were more than 86,000 registered vehicles on the island.

Drunk Driving Cases Remain Stable

The number of alcohol-related accidents has remained relatively unchanged compared to previous years. In 2024, over 170 incidents involved suspected drunk driving, with nearly 85% of those drivers being held responsible for the accidents.

Despite the overall rise in accidents, the number of fatal crashes has not significantly increased. Over the past few years, the average annual death toll has remained around 20 fatalities.

Increase in Right-Hand Drive Vehicle Accidents

Accidents involving right-hand drive (RHD) vehicles have been increasing. In 2021, there were approximately 350 incidents involving RHD vehicles, whereas in 2024, that number exceeded 500. Additionally, drivers of these vehicles were found responsible in nearly 78% of cases.

The proportion of RHD vehicle accidents has grown from 3.5% of total crashes in 2021 to nearly 4.5% in 2024. Experts suggest that difficulties with overtaking and distance perception could be contributing factors to this trend.

Busiest Roads See the Most Accidents

The majority of traffic accidents in Curaçao occur on the island’s busiest roads. The Schottegatweg recorded 512 incidents in 2024, up from 423 in 2021. The Rooseveltweg also saw an increase in accidents, rising from 389 in 2021 to 460 in 2024. The Sta. Rosaweg experienced a smaller but noticeable increase, from 350 incidents in 2021 to 410 in 2024.

Authorities continue to monitor traffic trends closely and urge drivers to be more cautious, especially on high-traffic roads.
