Thick Saharan Dust Cloud Expected Over Curaçao on Monday, Residents with Allergies Urged to Take Precautions

WILLEMSTAD – Curaçao is expected to experience one of the highest concentrations of Saharan dust seen in recent months on Monday, prompting warnings for residents, particularly those who suffer from allergies, asthma, or other respiratory conditions.

Meteorological forecasts indicate that a dense plume of Saharan dust will move across the island beginning Sunday night and continue through Monday. The elevated dust levels are expected to reduce air quality and may cause discomfort for sensitive individuals.

Authorities are advising residents with allergies and respiratory issues to take extra precautions, including limiting prolonged exposure to outdoor conditions during periods of high dust concentration.

The dust event is also expected to contribute to hotter and drier conditions across the island. Forecasters note that the reduced cloud cover associated with the dust layer can make temperatures feel even more intense, increasing the risk of dehydration.

Residents are therefore being encouraged to drink plenty of water and avoid unnecessary outdoor activities during the hottest parts of the day.

In addition to the dusty conditions, weather forecasters are monitoring a tropical disturbance passing south of the island. As a result, scattered showers are expected between Monday and Tuesday despite the presence of the Saharan dust plume.

Saharan dust events are common in the Caribbean during this time of year, as large amounts of dust from the Sahara Desert are carried across the Atlantic Ocean by prevailing winds. These dust clouds can affect visibility, air quality, and weather patterns throughout the region.

Health experts typically recommend that vulnerable individuals, including young children, the elderly, and those with respiratory illnesses, remain indoors as much as possible during periods of high dust concentration.

The current dust episode is expected to gradually diminish after Monday, although weather conditions will continue to be monitored throughout the week.
