The role of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations must be clearer

THE HAGUE - The role of the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations (BZK) in strengthening law enforcement is unclear. This is according to State Secretary for Kingdom Relations Alexandra van Huffelen

In the government's response to the policy review of Article 1 of its budget, Van Huffelen says that strengthening law enforcement is formulated too unclearly. That is why the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations will adjust its efforts for law enforcement this year.

Article 1 of the budget states the objective of strengthening law enforcement: 'to promote good governance and strengthen the rule of law.' According to various researchers, the objective is formulated too broadly. The CAS (Curaçao, Aruba, and Sint Maarten) islands also have an autonomous role and other ministries also play a role. According to Van Huffelen, this division of roles, in combination with a lack of available information, is the reason for limited systemic overviews of results. In addition, there is no baseline measurement.

The State Secretary says that she will start working with the recommendations of the policy advisers and that she wants to form a new vision about cooperation within the Kingdom. Together with the Ministers of Justice and Security (JenV) and Defense, she will adjust law enforcement based on these principles.
