SSK Urges Government Action as Cost of Living Continues to Rise

WILLEMSTAD – Labor union federation SSK is calling on the government of Curaçao to take more decisive action to address the rising cost of living, warning that households are increasingly struggling while concrete measures remain limited.

According to the organization, prices for everyday goods and services continue to climb, putting pressure on family budgets across the island. SSK argues that, unlike Curaçao, other countries in the region such as Aruba have already implemented measures to cushion the impact of rising prices.

The union is advocating for targeted interventions, including price controls on essential goods and support to offset fuel costs. It also stresses the need for stronger oversight of supermarket pricing to ensure that increases are justified and not excessive.

SSK highlights that the burden is especially heavy for low-income households, where rising expenses are felt most acutely. To protect purchasing power, the organization is calling for salary adjustments, particularly an increase in the minimum wage.

In addition to government action, SSK emphasizes the importance of public awareness. The union encourages residents to adopt cost-saving habits, such as using energy more efficiently and reducing transportation expenses where possible.

SSK maintains that a combined effort between government policy and individual responsibility is necessary to mitigate the ongoing impact of inflation on Curaçao’s population.
