Social media allegations of patient's death due to HAP mishandling disproved

Main news | By Correspondent April 12, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - On April 9, 2024, social media erupted with claims that a woman had died due to mishandling by the General Practitioner Clinic (HAP). However, an investigation conducted by the HAP has revealed crucial information debunking these allegations.

The sequence of events unfolded on April 7, 2024, when the patient's son contacted the HAP at 11:55 a.m., reporting his mother's abdominal cramps and vomiting, which had commenced earlier that day. Upon examination by HAP physicians, the patient received appropriate medication, including Buscopan for abdominal cramps and Metoclopramide for nausea, aligning with the NHG (Dutch General Practitioners Assosiation) guidelines. After being observed for 45 minutes, during which she improved, the patient was advised to contact the HAP if her symptoms worsened or to visit her general practitioner the next day.

Later, while heading home, the patient experienced abdominal pain again, prompting her son to call the Emergency Department (ED). The ED suggested letting the previously administered Buscopan take effect. Unfortunately, upon reaching home, the patient sustained self-inflicted injuries, leading to profuse bleeding, likely exacerbated by blood thinners. She was subsequently taken to the ED, where no abnormalities were found in her blood values. Despite this, she was admitted for further evaluation and later transferred to the intensive care unit. Tragically, the patient passed away on April 8, 2024, due to septic shock, unrelated to the symptoms presented at the HAP or the medication administered.

Furthermore, discussions with the patient's son revealed a misunderstanding regarding the appropriateness of Buscopan administration, with his general practitioner suggesting otherwise. However, NHG guidelines support the HAP's actions. The HAP deeply regrets the unwarranted accusations circulating on social media, emphasizing the importance of verifying information before publication, particularly in cases involving patient deaths.

In conclusion, the HAP extends its heartfelt condolences to the family of the deceased, urging for accurate reporting and understanding amidst such sensitive matters.
