WILLEMSTAD - Soccer in Curaçao is facing a deep crisis, characterized by internal conflicts within the Curaçao Soccer Federation (FFK) and an escalating power struggle that has brought the youth leagues to a standstill. The issues have culminated in a conflict between FFK members and the current president, Ramiro Griffith, resulting in a vote of no confidence against Griffith and a looming suspension by FIFA.
On May 11, 2024, an extraordinary general meeting was scheduled to discuss the vote of no confidence against President Griffith. However, to the great anger of the attending members, Griffith did not appear, which was perceived as a sign of disrespect.
In response, the members decided to hold a press conference and demanded that Griffith resign within 24 hours. Griffith, who communicates through the media, seems unwilling to step down and emphasizes FIFA's support for his presidency.
FIFA's Intervention
According to Griffith, FIFA has repeatedly stated that no new elections for the FFK board should take place until the statutes and electoral regulations are approved and in compliance with FIFA and Concacaf rules.
This position was confirmed in several letters from FIFA, which make it clear that any decision that jeopardizes this process will not be recognized. FIFA even threatens to suspend the FFK if these instructions are not followed.
Youth League
The immediate consequence of this governance crisis is the suspension of youth soccer matches. The closure of stadiums and the postponement of games not only affect the involved clubs and players but also the future of local soccer. Khalid Sinouh and Dick Advocaat, in charge of the national team, have expressed their concern about the consequences of this situation for the image and performance of Curaçao soccer at the international level.
In addition to the political struggle, financial irregularities have also come to light under Griffith's leadership. Kenneth 'Bob' Bernabela, one of the critics, has pointed out ongoing issues with submitting financial reports and using funds without approval from the members. Under Griffith, four different national coaches have been replaced, resulting in significant costs due to terminated contracts and legal proceedings.
Outlook
FFK members have given Griffith an ultimatum: resign or face a strong vote of no confidence. Meanwhile, FIFA has emphasized that the approval of the new statutes and subsequent elections are the only way out of this crisis. If Griffith continues to refuse to resign, the consequences could be severe, including possible suspension of the FFK and international competition problems.
