SITEK voices strong opposition to teachers' salary reductions

Main news | By Correspondent August 9, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The education union SITEK has firmly opposed any reductions in teachers' salaries, as stated by the union's president, Darius 'Lio' Plantijn, in a press conference today. Plantijn expressed concern over recent trends in the education sector, noting that a decline in student enrollment at some schools has led to a decrease in teachers' working hours, and consequently, salary cuts in certain cases.

Plantijn emphasized that such salary reductions are legally untenable, asserting that teachers with permanent contracts are protected from pay cuts resulting from a decrease in their working hours. "It is impossible for salaries to be reduced under these circumstances," he stated.

In response to these developments, SITEK has engaged in discussions with various school boards and is committed to advocating for the rights and protection of teachers. Plantijn pointed out the paradox in the situation, recalling that just a few years ago, there was a notable shortage of teachers due to an increasing student population. He finds it perplexing that schools are now contemplating reduced working hours.

To support his claims, Plantijn has called for access to statistics regarding student enrollment numbers in Curaçao over the past several years. This data could provide insight into the current situation and help clarify the reasons behind the proposed salary cuts.

SITEK says it remains vigilant in its efforts to protect educators and ensure fair treatment within the education system. The union plans to continue its dialogue with school authorities to address these critical issues.
