Safety levy increases air travel costs to and from Curaçao

Main news | By Correspondent October 2, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - A new levy on departing passengers in Curaçao, the Passenger Safety Oversight Charge (PSOC), is set to make travel to and from Curaçao slightly more expensive.

Starting from January 1, 2024, a fee equivalent to 3.12 guilders will be levied on nearly all passengers departing from Curaçao International Airport (CAP).

According to the Curaçao Civil Aviation Authority (CCAA), this levy is necessary due to the rising costs associated with ensuring aviation safety. Various studies have indicated that the budget provided by the local government to CCAA is insufficient to carry out the task effectively.

The basis for this levy is established in the Aviation Safety Levy Ordinance, which has been approved by the Curaçao parliament.

CCAA emphasizes in its communication that this is not a tax. The funds collected from this levy will be entirely used for CCAA's responsibilities.

Based on the projected number of departing passengers, which is 800,000 in 2024, it is expected that the new levy will generate around 2.5 million guilders.
