WILLEMSTAD - Today the Pisas government was supposed to talk to Venezuela about reopening the border between that country and Curaçao, but the talks have been postponed. This is reported by the Ministry of General Affairs.
According to the prime minister, Curaçao cannot do anything about it and the reason for not continuing lies outside the power of Curaçao. The proposed new date is in the week of January 30.
Those borders have been closed since February 2019, after President Maduro accused the islands of aiding gold smuggling from his country.
According to Pisas, the subject is important for Curaçao and his ministry will do everything possible to hold this meeting as soon as possible.
The Netherlands, Aruba and Curaçao want a phased opening of the borders with Venezuela, whereby it must be clear that the talks in no way entail recognition of the country's election results in 2021.
Last month, Pisas was very positive and the opening would be a matter of time, perhaps as early as the first week of January. But that turned out to be too optimistic, as it turns out. The exact reason for the delay is not reported.
