WILLEMSTAD - A new investigation into large-scale theft of water and electricity in the Ma Luisa neighborhood points to potential internal involvement at Aqualectra. The cables used in the theft belong to the utility company, which could indicate the involvement of employees or contractors with access to these materials. Aqualectra will be conducting an investigation into this matter.
During a recent raid at an address in Ma Luisa, the police and Aqualectra technicians discovered illegally installed cables and water pipelines. What stands out is that this form of theft has been found at the same address for the third time.
Issues
The theft is putting pressure on the water supply in the neighborhood. According to the utility company, the illegal tapping of water and electricity is causing significant problems for the community.
Residents are experiencing lower water pressure, and there are indications that the stolen water is then being illegally sold.
Aqualectra was already aware of possible water theft at the address, but the discovery of electricity theft was new. There is currently a 'grace period' until the end of October during which individuals involved can voluntarily register.
For this specific case falling within this period, no report will be filed for the time being. However, the company emphasizes that measures will be taken to prevent further theft.
Political Response
Although Member of Parliament Elvin Gerard of the ruling PNP party has repeatedly drawn attention to illegal practices like these, there have been few concrete measures taken to date. The potential involvement of Aqualectra employees in the theft makes the case even more complex and urgent.
