WILLEMSTAD - During the second quarterly meeting for the members and board of the Curaçao Hospitality and Tourism Association (CHATA), Board President Mimi Luttge delivered the opening remarks. This was followed by several speakers who gave inspiring presentations on the developments in tourism in Curaçao. The outlook is very positive, with notable growth in hotel capacity, the number of tourists, and international flights.
According to Anuschka Cova, the new CEO of CHATA, the high economic impact of tourism is clearly visible. This is evident from the upward trend in the number of visitors and hotel rooms, which reflects the confidence of investors and the potential for further growth in the tourism sector.
Cova also emphasized the importance of collaboration within the sector and with the government and other stakeholders. "We need to join forces and focus on ensuring training and enhancing our service, human capital, and infrastructure," said Cova. Research by the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten (CBCS), presented by Candice Henriquez, also confirms the undeniable economic impact of tourism.
Muryad de Bruin, Director of the Curaçao Tourist Board (CTB), confirmed this growth and stated that they will continue their marketing activities for Curaçao with various international target groups. He emphasized the importance of retraining and upskilling staff to better align with the job market and enhance tourists' experiences.
Peggy Croes, Senior Vice President of Curaçao Airport Partners (CAP), presented the projected flights for the coming year, which show an increase compared to previous years. CAP is aware of the logistical challenges in and around the airport and is committed to sustainable improvements in these areas.
Michelle Metsch from Downtown Management Organization (DMO) gave an inspiring presentation on concrete plans for the revitalization of Punda. This will require not only financial resources but also the support of the entire population, the private sector, and the government to make Punda a major tourist attraction once again.
Additionally, CHATA proudly announced their initiative to encourage students to pursue studies in the hospitality sector. As a gesture of their commitment, CHATA is offering hospitality scholarships this year to two students from the University of Curaçao: first-year student Kyziah Werleman and second-year student Clarise Kirindongo, both of whom were surprised with this news today. Various presentations also emphasized the importance of human capital. The CHATA HR Taskforce has been fully established and is led by Simone Garbelman. The message was clear: we will continue to grow with a focus on sustainable development. CHATA remains committed to working with the government, members, and other stakeholders to safeguard this crucial pillar of the economy.
CHATA also welcomed 10 new members, with another five members set to join next month. In September, CHATA will hold its next members' meeting to continue sharing relevant developments in the tourism sector. CHATA is very grateful to all the sponsors who contributed to the Membership Meeting, including MCB, Building Depot, and Curaçao Marriott Beach Resort.
