Police to Begin Checks on Vehicle Tax Payments and New License Plate Collection

WILLEMSTAD – Motorists in Curaçao who have not yet paid their 2026 vehicle tax or collected their new license plates are being urged to do so as authorities prepare to begin enforcement checks.

The warning follows a letter sent by the acting Head of the Receiver's Office (Landontvanger) to the Curaçao Police Force, informing officers that inspections related to vehicle tax payments and the distribution of the island's new license plates will soon begin.

According to the announcement, police will check whether motorists have fulfilled their vehicle tax obligations and whether those who have already paid have also collected and installed their new registration plates.

Vehicle owners who have not yet paid their annual vehicle tax, as well as those who have paid but have not yet picked up their new license plates, are being given one final opportunity to complete the process before enforcement begins.

The government introduced the new license plate system earlier this year as part of the annual vehicle registration process. Initially, police inspections focused primarily on verifying that motorists had paid their vehicle tax, while authorities indicated that specific checks related to the new license plates would be introduced at a later stage.

Officials are encouraging all vehicle owners to ensure that their tax payments are up to date and that their new license plates have been collected and properly installed to avoid potential penalties or other enforcement measures during upcoming roadside inspections.
