Plans for LNG Plant in Curaçao halted due to rising gas prices

Main news | By Correspondent June 24, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The ambitious project to construct a Liquid Natural Gas (LNG) plant in Curaçao has been put on hold, primarily due to the surge in gas prices triggered by the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This development has rendered the project less feasible, according to Minister Ruisandro Cijntje of Economy.

Minister Cijntje highlighted that the drastic increase in natural gas prices has made it imprudent to pursue the construction of an LNG plant at this time. In response to the changing economic landscape, the government has decided to shift its focus towards generating more green energy for the island, specifically through water and solar power initiatives.

Eagle LNG, a company with advanced plans to build the LNG plant, has seen its project come to a halt. Despite this setback, Minister Cijntje noted that other companies, such as Curoil, are making strides in sustainable energy production. Progress in this area continues, indicating a positive shift towards greener energy solutions for Curaçao.

The decision to prioritize renewable energy sources comes as part of a broader strategy to enhance energy independence and sustainability on the island. As the global energy market remains volatile, Curaçao's move towards water and solar energy signifies a proactive step in securing a stable and eco-friendly energy future.
