Pharmacies stage protest, impacting access to medications

Main news | By Correspondent November 22, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Patients seeking medication face disruptions today as pharmacies initiate a protest. Owners of these establishments are expressing their discontent with the current state of affairs, citing outdated and insufficient reimbursements, coupled with an overwhelming workload.

Due to the ongoing action, individuals requiring pharmaceutical services are directed to the CMC hospital pharmacy. The decision to temporarily suspend services is part of a broader movement aimed at drawing attention to the challenges faced by pharmacy owners.

A significant gathering of pharmacy staff took place at Wilhelminapark, symbolizing their united stance on the matter. Their march towards Fort Amsterdam, the venue for the weekly council of ministers meeting, underscores the urgency of their concerns.

The crux of the issue lies in the demand for a rate increase from the government. Specifically, pharmacy owners are advocating for an adjustment in the prescription line fee, proposing an increase from 7 to 10 guilders. This proposed change is positioned as a provisional measure, set to address immediate concerns until a more comprehensive and sustainable framework is established.

The decision to close pharmacies serves as a tangible demonstration of the industry's collective call for acknowledgment and action from governmental authorities. The reopening of these vital healthcare facilities hinges on a favorable response from the government regarding the proposed rate adjustments.
