Persistent poverty in Curaçao

Main news | By Correspondent July 25, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - Several neighborhoods in Curaçao are facing persistent poverty, as indicated in the 'Bario Plan for the Renewal of Area-Based Police Care' presented by Minister Shalten Hato of Justice.

In 21 areas, 30 percent of households live below the poverty line. These neighborhoods are predominantly found in densely populated areas. Residents often have lower levels of education, struggle to make ends meet, have less access to stable employment, and are frequently unmarried.

The neighborhoods reportedly affected include Flip, Tera Pretu, Lelienberg, Soto, Ronde Klip, Seru Grandi, Souax, Domi, Otrobanda, Punda, Scharloo, Berg Altena, Piscadera, Wishi, Roosendaal, Buena Vista, Kanga/Dein, Muizenberg, Fortuna, Koraal Specht, and Steenrijk.

Additionally, there is an increasing aging population, with 28 percent of the inhabitants being 60 years or older.

Minister Hato stated, "The plan for renewed neighborhood policing pays significant attention to the socio-economic situation in general and, in particular, to the affected areas."
