Parliamentary questions about hassle in Caribbean countries for "same -sex marriage"

Main news | By Correspondent December 21, 2022

THE HAGUE - What has the State Secretary of Kingdom Relations done to convince Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten to allow the marriage of people of the same sex?

Member of the Dutch Parliament for the coalition party VVD Roelien Kamminga wants to hear that from the Minister of Kingdom Relations. She also asks the State Secretary if "she agrees that it is of the utmost importance that all residents of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and therefore also Curaçao have the opportunity to be able to marry a partner of the same sex."

Kamminga asked the minister if she is familiar with the news report that the government of Curaçao wants to go into cassation against a judicial decision of the Common Court of Justice with regard to the opening of the marriage of persons of the same sex.

The Dutch MP also asks if the minister agrees that it is of the utmost importance that all residents of the Kingdom of the Netherlands and therefore also Curaçao have the opportunity to be able to marry a partner of the same sex and if this is not the case, why not.

Kamminga wants the minister to indicate what the Dutch government has done in recent years in the field of marriage for people of the same sex in its relations with autonomous countries.

Another question is if the minister has had contact with the Curaçao government about the intention to go into cassation against the judicial decision.

The MP wants an indication of the estimated number of marriages of persons of the same gender that could take place if the judicial ruling of the Common Court of Justice is maintained. She wants to know how large is this number.

Kamminga wants to know what the minister thinks of the fact that a registered partnership in Aruba is possible for people of the same sex, but this is not the case in Curaçao. And also, what the minister thinks about the impact of the ruling of the Common Court of Justice on the other countries within the Kingdom. Finally, the Dutch MP asked the minister how the minister sees the dialogue with the autonomous countries within the Kingdom on this subject in the future.
