Main news | By Correspondent January 17, 2025

WILLEMSTAD – Parliament Chairperson Charetti America-Francisca has received a formal request to organize a technical briefing on the draft National Ordinance for a basic payment account for consumers. This proposed legislation aims to ensure that every citizen has access to a simple, affordable bank account, which the proponents argue is a fundamental human right.

The request was submitted by Members of Parliament Gilbert Doran, Zita Jesus-Leito, Anthony Godett, and Corinne Djaoen-Genero. In their letter, they emphasized the importance of a bank account as a basic necessity for economic and social participation. They also highlighted the need for clear communication regarding the costs and benefits of the basic account to ensure that consumers are well-informed.

The briefing is expected to include representatives from the Curaçao Bankers Association, the Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten, and the Fundashon pa Konsumidó. These stakeholders are anticipated to provide insights into the cost structure, regulatory oversight, and added value of the proposed account.

The initiators argue that the issue is of significant societal importance and that further parliamentary discussions are essential to carefully assess the implications of the legislation. The goal is to ensure that all citizens of Curaçao have access to essential banking services, fostering greater financial inclusion and equality.
