Parliament to deliberate on Oryx deal

Main news | By Correspondent August 7, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The agreement made by Curaçao with the company Oryx continues to stir debate on the island, particularly concerning expectations about the reopening of the refinery. In an effort to gain more clarity, the Parliament will hold a central committee meeting on September 3rd to discuss the Oryx deal. Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas and the management of Refineria di Kòrsou (RdK) will be present at this meeting. On July 1st, RdK, on behalf of the government, finalized the agreement for Oryx to use the refinery facilities.

Minister Charles Cooper stated today that the deal includes a provision for Oryx to start refining oil at a later stage. Additionally, Global Oil will also begin oil refining in due course. This clarification comes amidst previous uncertainties. Cooper emphasized that the government has not raised false hopes with the deal, contrary to claims made by various parties.

The agreement with Oryx has been a point of contention since its announcement. The central committee meeting aims to address the concerns and provide a transparent overview of the deal's specifics. The key issue revolves around the timeline and feasibility of the refinery becoming operational again, a matter of significant economic and social importance for Curaçao.

Background of the Deal

The refinery, a cornerstone of Curaçao's economy, has faced numerous challenges over the years. The deal with Oryx is seen by many as a potential revival of the refinery's operations, which could bring economic benefits such as job creation and increased local investment. However, skepticism remains about the practicalities and timelines associated with the agreement.

Details and Expectations

According to Minister Cooper, Oryx’s entry into oil refining is planned for a future phase, indicating a structured approach to bringing the refinery back online. The inclusion of Global Oil in the future plans further diversifies the potential operational capabilities of the refinery. These developments are expected to play a crucial role in stabilizing and boosting Curaçao’s energy sector.

Community and Economic Impact

The local community and stakeholders are keenly watching the developments. The refinery has historically been a major employer and a significant contributor to the island's GDP. The delay in its operation has had adverse effects on the local economy, leading to heightened interest in any potential revival.

Government’s Stance

Minister Cooper's reassurances aim to quell the doubts and criticisms that have surfaced. He insists that the government has been transparent and realistic in its communications and that the phased approach to oil refining by Oryx and Global Oil will ultimately benefit the island.

Looking Ahead

The upcoming parliamentary meeting is expected to shed more light on the specifics of the Oryx deal, including timelines, investment details, and operational plans. It will also provide a platform for legislators to question and discuss the broader implications of the agreement.

As Curaçao navigates this pivotal moment, the outcomes of these discussions will likely shape the future trajectory of the island's industrial and economic landscape. The engagement of multiple stakeholders, including government officials, industry experts, and the public, underscores the importance of transparency and accountability in moving forward with such significant agreements.
