Parliament in debate with Prime Minister about refinery

Main news | By Correspondent February 13, 2023

WILLEMSTAD - The Parliament of Curaçao is debating about the refinery with Prime Minister Gilmar Pisas today. Central to the debate are the forged documents of the Caribbean Petroleum Refinery (CPR).

The opposition expressed its horror during a public meeting three weeks ago at the forged documents supplied by CPR. The Central Bank of Curaçao and Sint Maarten and Refineria di Korsou have both filed a complaint against the CPR at the Public Prosecution.

The meeting was suspended at the time, so Pisas still has to answer the questions from the first round today, and then the second round follows.

Michelangelo Martines of the opposition party KEM wondered during the first debate why the government and RdK are still negotiating with these 'gangsters and mafia'. Pisas indicated that there are documents circulating in Parliament that are 'non-disclosure' and that a claim can be submitted for this. Pisas asked the opposition to "depoliticize" the process.

RdK admitted that one of CPR's investors allegedly falsified financial documents. CPR said it had taken all necessary measures and cut off communication with the investors involved.

Update: Prime Minister Pisas announced that RdK will not continue negotiations with CPR.
