Number of unusual transactions in Caribbean Netherlands rises sharply

Main news | By Correspondent June 29, 2023

THE HAGUE - The number of reported unusual transactions in Caribbean Netherlands has seen an explosive increase in the past two years, from less than 900 in 2020 to 7,456 in 2022. This is revealed in the annual report of the Financial Intelligence Unit-Netherlands (FIU).

The FIU attributes the increase as a direct result of the amendments made to the Law on the Prevention of Money Laundering and Financing of Terrorism BES as of July 2021, which have strengthened the information position of law enforcement agencies.

The majority of the 7,337 reported unusual transactions originated from banks. 728 transactions were deemed suspicious after investigation by the FIU. The relevant case files have been transferred to the police, among others, for further investigation.
