No joint Parlatino statement on Venezuela

Main news | By Correspondent August 14, 2024

WILLEMSTAD - The Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino) has not issued a joint statement on the situation in Venezuela, despite the efforts of Curaçao's MP Ana-Maria Pauletta from the PAR party. During a recent Parlatino meeting in Peru, Pauletta took the initiative for the statement.

The proposed statement focused on the need for transparency in Venezuela's electoral process, where incumbent President Nicolás Maduro was declared the winner by the national electoral commission on July 28, despite international criticism and concerns from the Venezuelan opposition.

Pauletta expressed regret over the lack of an official position from Parlatino. Although the Curaçao delegation signed the statement, it received little support from other participating countries.

"It is the first time Parlatino has not issued a joint statement on Venezuela," said Pauletta. She further emphasized that the issue has been discussed within Parlatino and that there is international attention on the call for transparency in Venezuela's elections.
